Continuum Mechanics

Syllabus

This course deals with the analysis of the mechanical response of materials when subjected to finite deformation. Here we generalize the small deformation theory (as discussed in the Theory of Elasticity) and derive finite deformation theories. Specifically, we learn about the following topics: principles governing the mechanics of continua, kinematics of deformation, including the Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, development of stress and strain tensors, conservation principles to derive field equations describing solid and fluid mechanics, and sample problems in linear elasticity and viscous fluid flow.
